GOOP and Gwyneth Paltrow have a case of GOOPitis, which according to Dr. Steve Gundry is due to my potty mouthed facts. Or tomato skins. Or something. I find it all very disjointed, inadequately researched, bloated, and mansplainy.

I first saw this GOOP letter thing on the train back from a wonderful day in Manchester visiting with family (I’m over in the U.K. on holiday) when my phone almost blew up with Twitter notifications, partly because GOOP dedicated their first ever fighting words to little old me (apparently I have some gall suggesting women should not listen to second hand health advice from a ghost) and partly because even High Priestess Paltrow herself had descended from her bespoke, wooden vagina steaming throne to tweet about it among the mortals.

Apparently GOOP thinks I am a “third-party” who critiques them “to leverage that interest and bring attention to” myself. This  opinion leads me to wonder if they have ever read what I write or even visited my blog? I was blogging about pseudoscience long before Paltrow first squatted over a pot of steaming allergens and leveraged her celebrity to draw attention to her website. In GOOPlandia having a newsletter, selling products, hosting a very expensive swellness summit, being on the cover of magazines, and appearing on Jimmy Kimmel is apparently not leveraging anything. This is Paltrow’s privilege and hers alone. I am curious to hear what exactly the ladies in waiting who edit GOOP think I am leveraging when I write posts about laws designed to curtail reproductive rights or punish women? Then again they don’t write those posts so they don’t see the abuse that follows.

The editors at GOOP find me “strangely confident” in my “assertion that putting a crystal in your vagina for pelvic-floor strengthening exercises would put you in danger of getting Toxic Shock Syndrome—even though there is no study/case/report which links the two.” I am not strangely confident about vaginal health, I am appropriately confident because I am the expert. I did 4 years of medical school, a 5 year OB/GYN residency, a 1 year fellowship in infectious diseases, I am board certified in OB/GYN in 2 countries, I am board certified by the American Board of Pain Medicine and the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Pain Medicine and I am appropriately styled Dr. Jen Gunter MD, FRCS(C), FACOG, DABPM, ABPM (pain). A woman with no medical training who tells women to walk around with a jade egg in their vaginas all day, a jade egg that they can recharge with the energy of the moon no less, is the strangely confident one.

This assertion that jade eggs are safe because there is no reported case of toxic shock syndrome is not even acceptable for a grade 4 science fair project. The incidence of menstrual toxic shock syndrome is 1-2/100,000 so it would take a lot of jade egg wearing (meaning the kind of sales that bring tears to eyes of the team at GOOP) to get enough data. However, luckily I am an expert and I know basic science so can form a highly educated expert opinion. As an expert I know that introduction of microscopic amounts of oxygen is one very important step in menstrual toxic shock syndrome, by microscopic I mean the amount of oxygen trapped in a tampon’s fibers (organic cotton still traps oxygen, sorry GOOP) or the amount of oxygen that could be trapped in the microscopic crevices on a vaginal jade egg repeatedly exposed to a pH of 4-4.5 in the vagina. Or the kind of oxygen that could enter the vagina if a vaginal jade egg slides down to the introitus if wearing it while sleeping. What if someone using a jade egg is a producer of toxic shock syndrome superantigens (we know 1% of women are colonized vaginally with TSS-1 producing strains of Staph aureus) and the superatigens are reintroduced vaginally with air during jade egg insertion? These superantigens are quite resistant to heat, 10% bleach, and even dessication. In fact they can be reactivated one year later after drying out. So GOOP editors need to tell me scientifically how they know a jade egg can be cleaned of toxic shock super antigen without damaging the jade thus allowing more oxygen to be inserted with the next use. I haven’t even begun to talk about the impact of oxygen on lactobacilli.

The jade eggs and tampons that feature in the GOOP post are conveniently located in the same screen for purchase. Speaking of tampons the GOOP editors are apoplectic that I could be “100 percent” certain that conventional tampons are safe. Of course when I write about toxic shock syndrome I address the very low risk with tampons, but here the GOOPsters are worried about glyphosate. If they had read my post on tampon safety they would know the WHO says the following about glyphosate:

…the absence of carcinogenic potential in rodents at human-relevant doses and the absence of genotoxicity by the oral route in mammals, and considering the epidemiological evidence from occupational exposures, the Meeting concluded that glyphosate is unlikely to pose a carcinogenic risk to humans from exposure through the diet.

It is possible that if GOOP got their tampon information from a gynecologist they would know that 40 years of exclusive tampon use would expose a woman to a maximum of 1 mg of glyphosate over her lifetime. According to European standards a 50 kg woman can safely eat 25 mg of glyphosate a day. A lifetime of heavy tampon use doesn’t approach the amount of glyphosate allowed for one day of oral intake. Pointing this out with snark is only mocking the person at GOOP who couldn’t be bothered to look it up. The science matters. Addressing GOOP errors like this one is not disrespecting women it’s pointing out the fucking truth.

I bristle the most at the idea that GOOP are the feminist keepers of the inner goddess and that I am a tool of the patriarchy. Suggesting that goat’s milk can cure parasites or that astrology has a role in mental health care is the exact opposite of empowering. This is subliminal messaging about fear and modern medicine and toxins and it drives people to waste money, get unindicated and often expensive testing, and even delay care. It is also cruel and quite simply makes everyone less informed. How can women possibly take away anything useful from a post that seems to promote anorexia for quick weight loss, or one that claims bras cause breast cancer, or the one that claims sea sponges are safe for menstrual hygiene, or the absolutely jaw-dropping advice that nitrosamine exposure from condoms could be carcinogenic?

How dare the editors of GOOP promote the idea that I somehow think women “are not intelligent enough to read something and take away what serves us, and leave what does not” when they present half-truths. The classic GOOP playbook is stoke fear with the names of dangerous sounding chemicals and then offer a “natural” cure (often found in their shop). For example with nitrosamines and condoms GOOP neglected to tell women that using 1 condom a week for 30 years results in about 0.9 microgram of absorbed nitrosamines and that animal studies suggest that topical application of about 1 g is a concern. So 30 years of condoms once a week is about one millionth of that single carcinogenic dose. Let me tell you kiddos bad information is the exact opposite of autonomy. How can women possibly take away anything useful when the crucial information about dose and the studies that show condoms reduce the rate of cancer are missing?

I also take umbrage at the idea that I have mocked women who desperately turn to the snake oil that GOOP sells. That is simply untrue. My ire has been directed squarely at the people spreading misinformation, especially if it is for profit. I blog to help women get better advice so they can be more empowered with their health.

Women are of course free to do what they want with their bodies. I have walked that walk more than any actress, editor, doctor, naturopath, ghost whisperer, or jade eggthusiast at GOOP. I literally write about choice regularly, a subject absent from the self-proclaimed collection of feminists at GOOP. How dare someone who has never counseled a woman about a second trimester abortion never mind done one lecture me on choice and health.

Regarding Aviva Romm I have frankly never heard of her, but she appears to be a vaccine skeptic so there’s that.

Dr. Gundry, however, is a special kind of patriarchal prick. I have devoted one sentence in my writing career to his pet project lectins and somehow this earned me a proper mansplaining about both potty mouth and evidence based medicine. Dr. Gundry even wants me to know he is pals with Dr. Oz (that is where I burst out laughing on the train), yes, he brags about being associated with the same Dr. Oz who was scolded by a Senate panel for abusing his national platform to push snake oil.

It gets better. Despite Gundry’s grandiose claims as the champion of peer review (this is the screenshot of some of his tedious mansplaining)…

Screen shot 2017-07-14 at 10.26.09 AM

…he defends his work on lectins with an article published in the Journal of International Society of Microbiota (JISM), which isn’t even indexed.

Screen shot 2017-07-14 at 10.50.57 AM

Indexing is a sign of a journal’s quality.  This JISM appears to be nothing more than a glorified syllabus that is available only to conference attendees. While he was mansplaining research ethics Gundry forgot to disclose the ongoing money he gets from drug companies. I don’t begrudge him the money from a patent, however, knowing someone has made almost $500k from Big Pharma over three years is a bias that is typically disclosed by someone as concerned with optics as Dr. Gundry. Feel free to look me up, but I’m not listed because I don’t accept Pharma money.

As for the swearing? Dear God that was precious. Gundry accuses me of not Googling him (I did, that is how I found the Atlantic article), but clearly hasn’t read a thing about me. If you are going to accuse someone of shoddy Internet research perhaps you should have your own Google hygiene in order. Dr. Gundry is worried that swearing on my gynecologic blog might have an impact on “my child.” I have written about the number of children I have several times in blog posts that have been widely read. Here’s a hint it’s not one.

What is super funny about Gundry is that he seems unaware that the original post with the word fuck was a response to Paltrow actually saying “If you want to fuck with me, bring your A game.” She even brags that she has napkins with that phrase! Is Dr. Gundry not worried what might happen if Paltrow’s kids see those napkins? And Paltrow swore on Jimmy Kimmel. Is Dr. Gundry going to wash out Paltrow’s mouth with raw goat’s milk soap? Perhaps he is unaware she swears. Who knows?

What astounds me the most is that GOOP and Gundry have targeted me. After all Stephen Colbert has mocked GOOP mercilessly several times. Gizmodo blasted GOOP over the fake NASA band aids. Tim Caulfield wrote an entire book Is Gwyneth Paltrow Wrong About Everything. Jezebel has taken GOOP to task. The Atlantic put up a blistering piece about Dr. Gundry’s lectin hypothesis and supplement selling. Vox coined the phrase GOOPshit. Quartz said GOOP is simply bespoke Infowars. A study took Paltrow to task for recipes involving unsafe food preparation. Why do I get under GOOPs dry brushed skin? I am not anymore right than anyone else who has taken on GOOP and Paltrow, although a reporter from the New York Times once called me a gift from the quote Gods so it is possible that I have a unique way of quickly summing up what is wrong with GOOP in a relatable way. It is also possible that they think I am an easy target because I am just a chick with a blog as opposed to a man with a blog or a reporter with a national or even international reach or a talk show host who can leverage writers, a PR team and an audience of millions. In short, is it because they think they can bully me?

To GOOP I say medicine is not subjective. There are facts and biological plausibility. Of course there are unknowns, but not in the way you present it. For example it is fact that sea sponges contain dirt and are completely untested for menstruation. It is highly biologically plausible that sea sponges could have a significant risk of toxic shock syndrome as they may be more absorbent than tampons, may introduce more oxygen than tampons, and be impossible to clean in a way that removes the toxic shock syndrome toxin or even staph aureus. If you disagree with this information it doesn’t mean you have a different opinion it means you are choosing to be uninformed or the potential risk of being uninformed matters less to you. Subjective would be preferring tampons with a plastic applicator over a cardboard one.

To Dr. Gundry I say you are a textbook mansplainer. Your letter to me and your picture should really appear on the Wikipedia page for mansplaining. I have dealt with surgeons like you throughout my training, you didn’t bother me then and you don’t bother me now. I will not read your book, but I will be happy to read your research when it makes it to JAMA or NEJM or BMJ

  1. I listened to your Recode/Decode podcast and it made my week. I am now going to work my way through your blog posts as a daily treat. I know that you write about more than this, and I intend to read it all, but I confess that I have harboured a deep, primordial ire for the whole Goop sadspace for years – I know I am not alone – so really appreciate your intelligent articulation if why it is so offensive. I don’t follow their – uh, work? bullshit? – closely enough to have realised how far they have gone down the medical misinformation rabbit hole. Thank you for pushing back, for your work on increasing scientific literacy and the information here on women’s heath. (PS I have also shared with colleagues who research on health and social media – they will love it.)

  2. You’re amazing! Thank you so much for all of the wonderful work you do. ❤ I found out about you through Women in the World and The New York Times and just had to follow your blog! 🙂 Keep kicking ass, sister!

  3. Dr. Jen, you are my new favourite writer! GOOP and the Donald would seem to be polar opposites yet are strangely alike in their “post-truth, my truths” era. I, too, find GOOP to be, maybe not the ‘worst’ anti-feminist publication (although maybe one of the most entertaining), but certainly up there. And the fact that they think an expert who calls them out on disseminating their dangerous drivel is the anti-feminist is one of the most mind-boggling pieces of ad-hominem logic.

  4. Ahahaha fantastic response! Well written, well researched, well delivered. I just wish more people would read this blog than the “fancy” bullshit that GOOP puts out. Absolutely infuriating. As if just by calling them out on their utter nonsense feel good crap is “going low” – how dare they! However those of us with a brain in our head, and the ability to distinguish between facts and utter bullshit, will make the right choices thanks in part to people like you. And thanks to the wonders of natural selection we’ll likely be around a lot longer than those who don’t. Keep up the great work – we need more people like you!!!!

  5. Your article is great and at times hilarious. I don’t mind the swearing. But to be perfectly honest I am not a fan of the word mansplaning. Men find it to be sexist and then say that all feminists are hypocritical for using such words. So now when I read the word it’s like fingernails on a chalkboard. Personally I say that the person was being condescending when I am treated like that. However it’s your choice I am just sharing my point of view. Anyway, will stay the hell away from Goop. Thanks for warning the public.

  6. Thank you for this amazing comeback in every way. I’ve had a lot of anger towards Goop and all thier false medical claims for awhile, and I just now found your blog. Everything you wrote makes me feel like I’m not alone. I’m not surprised they tried to target you, maybe they thought you would be an easy target like you said. How wrong they are. Dr. Gunter’s whole spiel was the most ridiculous though, ugh. Worse mansplaining example I’ve seen in awhile- and I’ve seen a lot! Keep up the wonderful work and writing- I look up to you.

  7. Doc, not only are you an OB/GYN, so you ought to know much more about vaginas than your average person, you’re a woman, so you have one of your own. I’m a big believer in subject matter expertise. How do you not go blind with rage at many of my fellow men (and some idiot women, like Gwyenth Paltrow) who want to decide they know more than you, and let you know in no uncertain terms?????

I saw the article in the NY Times. I’m now a big fan of yours.

  8. I adore everything about this blog post. Can you move to Boston and be my doctor please? 🙂

  9. Excellent, informative post. Celebrities can be so self-absorbed and phony. Best wishes to you!

  10. 1. thank you dr. jen gunter for (F*)actual information. **f=fucking and also, factual.
    2. did anyone else notice that dr. gundry’s writing supposedly appeared in a medical journal called: JISM…sound it
out. rhymes with “fizz”. just sayin’.

  11. I FUCKING LOVE YOU DR GUNTER!!!!! I hope I don’t have to wash my mouth with a goat milk lathered sea sponge now….

  12. Just as an additional note, at least one of their quoted doctors, Dr Gundry, is listed on quite a selection of sites questioning both his science and the plethora of products he sells based on his ideas. I am not a scientist, so I have no idea of the truth here, but if anyone is inventing something just to make a profit …

  13. Just read the article on Goop – wow, what a load of patronising BS that was!

I have long been bemused by the world of pseudo-science, especially the handful of qualified scientists who seem quite happy to believe in the most bizarre tripe. One doesn’t have to be a quack to sell elixirs and potions from the back of a wagon.

If there ever was a truism, it is this:

No amount of qualifications, experience, published respectability, or long titles and appended letters, will ever prevent a human being from lying their arses off to sell a book or make a profit.

  14. If the Goop team were smart, they would hire you on as a consultant to review medical articles before posting. Apparently they are too high to admit having made mistakes and spread misinformation. Good for you and your lasso of truth! This woman is glad that you are doing what you do!

  15. When I first read about sponges for menstrual use, I thought “Hmm. That’s a novel use for a kitchen sponge. What size are they cutting it to so it fits in there, though?” Then I realized they meant actual sea sponges and was disgusted. It’s a *dead animal.* Why would you want to stick a dead animal INSIDE YOUR BODY?

  16. This is awesome, ive never read Goop before, but it was worth it for this! Dont know whats better, a male ex heart surgeon turned pseudo nutritionist trying to school an ob/gyn on the safety of putting objects up vaginas, whichever fucktard likened the traditional food pyramid to cigarettes and female hysteria, or the Aviva lady justifying untested, untrialed snake oil because research always comes after mass consumerism, and stating that omega 3 was a heart health fad before the research (research into omega 3 effect on cardio health started around late 1970’s), st johns wort was an antidepressant fad before the research (research started in ancient greece) and mediterranian diet was a heart health fad before the research (earliest i found was 1987) but still probably long before jamie oliver made it cool. Not sure how she came up with the idea that popular demand precedes all research when it comes to ‘wellness trends’, it might for snake oil and illegal narcotics, but not legitimate products designed to improve health.

  17. F*CK YEAH. Don’t let them get you down. I love that they essentially come out saying “we won’t tolerate bullies!” and follow it with Gundry’s paragraphs of misogyny, bullying & BS. Him and his response are truly something else.

(Also – oh heavens my future children that I don’t plan on having might read this F-Bomb someday!!!!) :eye roll:

  18. I am so sorry that Paltrow and GOOP have decided to attack you. I think it is because they are worried they will lose money if women read your accurate advice and quit buying their ridiculous jade eggs.

And….Gundry’s article appeared in…JISM? Really? A publication named after the slang name for ejaculate?

  19. An amazing rebuttal of nonsense peddled by those who are not experts and make dangerous sweeping statements. I would urge Ms. Paltrow to enroll for a MBBS course and the several years required after that to specialize in obs and gyn and maybe then she can comment.
    Dr. Sana.

  20. Hadley Freeman referred to this blog in a Guardian article and I’m so glad I clicked through and read it – this is amazing. Like Florence above, I have never left a comment on a blog but had to write and thank you. This just kicks ass in the most articulate, intelligent and admirable way possible. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  21. This is the first comment I have ever left on anything. But I am moved to do so: BRAVA! Fantastic research, wonderful riposte, fabulous blog, clever woman, all power to YOU! Thank you.

  22. I think there is something eecially irksome about essential hawking tat (no problem with that everyone has a mortgage to pay) but dressing it up in the Emperors new clothes then cuckooing the moral high ground when it is pointed out, is just, well, so bloody irritating! That is bad enough but attacking women who are medical professionals who have dedicated their life and work to women’s health is actually shameful.

Absolutely loved your reponse. It is in fact perfection. Think I even gave a satisfied sigh after reading it.
Also doesn’t she suffer from osteopenia as a result of her diet?

  23. That is bad enough but attacking women who are medical professionals who have dedicated their life and work to women’s health is actually shameful.

  24. Just fantastic. Well done. Ben Goldacre was my hero, before reading this. You and he are now both my heroes. We didn’t go through the Reformation for no reason. I wouldn’t have studied sciences for many years if I’d have thought that we would be returning to the days of snake oil salesman. Keep it up, please. Don’t be bullied & don’t get downcast.

  25. Love your blog. Relate in so many ways. SteveD is right. I have def exp mansplaining and I have almost defiantly womansplained right back. Ah, to be a female leader in medicine…or anything for that matter. Keep debunking the garbage. It is a good and valiant fight. My specialty is critical care. If I didn’t use profanity I think my brain would quite literally explode. Best regards from a northern colleague.

  26. You are a brilliant brilliant writer and you summed it up perfectly for me with one simple statement, “I am the expert”. Not a matter of opinion, just a simple beautiful fact. Keep fighting the good fight and we (the intelligent ones) are right behind you.

  27. I adore my 17 year career as Women’s Health NP; I can’t get enough of more learning, more teaching and – most importantly – more of the precious gift of knowing I’ve been able to help a woman with a struggle and walk with her to a solution that suits her needs. I also slay with sarcasm and wit, rage at stupidity, cackle at the idea (STILL) that I’m in this super-lucrative field for the free pharmaceutical pens or to kill babies with vaccines. I am so thrilled to have found this article this morning, and will now spend my day off reading everything else you’ve written to strengthen my head-nod, stoke my rage, kick up my solid-education-research-based-totally-devoted and devoid of bullshit nursing practice, and continue to consider GOOP exactly what it is – a substance that is less useful, more disgusting and somehow more prolific than the greenish-yellow shit that constantly drips from my child’s nose during winter. thank you

  28. Your critique of GOOP in the NY Times did bring you and your website to my attention, and I am fucking glad it did. You are a new hero of mine. There’s a sucker born every minute in this country, and perhaps the fools that eat the goop shit deserve to be relieved of their money. But it does the heart good to see someone “wield the lasso of truth.”

  29. Nice push back against the false celebrity science nonsense selling machine. Goop is right up there with Dr. Oz! As a primary care doc who spends too much time countering dum Oz plebs, I can imagine your clinic days are similarly annoying bringing reality to women’s falsehoods. Cheers.

  30. Reblogged this on A Plus Attitudes and commented:
I am so glad I came across your article Dr. Gunter. I recently purchased The Plant Paradox and was having doubts with some of Dr. Gundry’s claims. I was willing to overlook those doubts based on the fact that Dr. Gundry’s claimed to be published in Medical Journals, but thanks to your explanation, that is not the case. Two things that had me suspicious about Dr. Gundry’s claims is that he is backed by Dr. Oz and he kinda pushes his supplements. Brava for your brave calling out of snake oil salesmen and misogyny!

  31. These pieces give me life! I have a nerve disorder that barely responds to meds for most people & a mental illness, and I get insane suggestions all the time of what will “cure” me. I’ve watched countless people go down these snake oil roads with conviction, only to waste thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars. Good doctors will offer suggestions, on top of treating you with methods that are scientifically backed, about SAFE alternative therapies to supplement your treatment plan.

Thank you for taking on GOOP and showing that it can all be discredited by simply googling info. So often patients use Google to dx themselves (not always a good idea, but many times we have to be our own advocates), but this is one case where a simple Google search can refute almost all of Paltrow’s claims. You kick ass and are writing pieces the world needs to hear!

  32. Of course you are a: “third-party” who critiques them “to leverage that interest and bring attention to” youself … and all I can say is “you go Girl!” I’m so irritated by our age of conning the stupid people.

  33. Just read a great article on you in the Sunday New York Times. I think Ms. Paltrow needs to stick to acting.

  34. Finally, someone of science is calling out this nonsense perpetuated by Ms. Paltrow and company. Thank you.

  35. Thank you for your blog and for helping people recognize the good form the mundane stupidity. You are certainly doing a lot of good. The New York Times picked up on your writing and I am so happy I found you.

  36. great job taking on the modern day snake oil salesman that love nothing better than separating people from their money.

That said, I DO take umbrage at the term “mansplaining”. I find it almost reverse sexist. If someone tries to speak down to you, and that person is a woman, should we now call that “womansplaining”?

Can we just call it boorish?

I believe for too long women have been considered second class citizens . Finally they are achieving the equality they deserve. But to hide behind sexist terms like mansplaining does nothing to advance things. In fact, I often felt women were better than men for they didn’t carry on the ridiculous male dominance games, like two bighorn sheep head butting each over to prove a point.

Mansplaining is a term that is degrading, and tries takes the real issue of sexism and minimizes it to a term that implies sexism when in reality, it could just be bad manners.

I have had woman bosses do to me the same thing that if a man did it to a woman, would be called “womansplaing”. Instead, I rolled my eyes, moved on and forgot about it.

I know I am going to get trolled for this, and this entire post will be labeled “mansplaining article number 1”. But that is not my intent. Instead, I want everyone on equal ground, and I would hate to see women fall for the same name calling crap that idiotic men have done for too long.

  37. I found you through the NYT article about your blog. I love you!!! Thank you for your use of profanity, your scientific rigor, and your intellectual exactitude. Really. Also I’m guessing you know my friend Dr. MVO. Of a feather!!

  38. I’m a fan! Gonna pass this blog along to my female friends and family.

Not a fan of Oracle-celebrities. And/or the women,or men who elevate them to their pedestal.

  39. Hello Dr Gunter,

I just read an article about you in The NY Times. I thought you would be interested in the attached article by laineygossip.com. It’s an interesting point of view.

I have been a SF Kaiser member for 24 years; and I love and trust my OBGYN there. Acrually, I would see any OBGYN in your department, I have had nothing but positive experiences. So, thank you for standing up to goop and promoting the truth about women’s health.

  40. Brilliant!! The amalgam of narcissism, voodoo, and greed is a recipe for disaster, especially for the victims of such a cocktail: the gullible and/or the desperate. Hope one of Paltrow’s crystals tells her to shut the “f” up or one of her jade, vagina eggs eats her alive!!! We are a physician family that entertains Eastern modalities (acupuncture, herbs (from a vetted, known source) as well as Western medicine, and I, recently, started supplemental Riboflavin, which stopped my lifelong, intermittent migraines in their tracks. Herbs have stemmed my husband and daughter’s GERD, when conventional pharmacopeia didn’t work and made my second-year medical student-daughter (in Boston) sick. I also believe that everyone should take probiotics and that antibiotics are overused. I also believe that Paltrow wins “the Gold” in the Charlatan Olympics.

  41. I just found this blog because of your post on the “vagina” highlighter and I’ve been binge reading it now…where have you been all my life? Thank you for bringing facts to women and helping us know about our bodies in real ways.

  42. Well done Dr Gunter – an excellent post, and one that should be widely read.

  43. Hi. Dr. Hunter. I want to commend you for taking on the pseudoscience gobbledygook (or is it gobbledygoop? 😉 that Goop is spreading! We need more MDs like you that engage in these sorts of discussions in ways the general public can understand!

Dr. Gundry has taken it upon himself to attack you for your commentary, which was informed by your years of expertise in women’s health, using his Surgeon MD status as if it somehow confers him expertise in the area of discussion. I feel it’s important people realize that this is a pattern with Dr. Gundry, and that his training doesn’t qualify him in any way to present his lectin theory as either plausible or likely.

Dr. Gundry is a surgeon by training, not a glycobiologist, yet has proposed a theory that is highly dependent on glycobiology to justify his line of health products. I AM a glycobiologist (my job involves developing glycoconjugate vaccines), and it is offensive/laughable that someone with such a poor understanding of such a specialized field would try to use cherry picked data from that field to provide some sort of validity to his health supplements.

While his assertion that lectins cause health issues is not a wholly unreasonable THEORY in and of itself, and might be true in certain SPECIFIC scenarios, like all good hypotheses it is nothing more than an idea that needs to be tested experimentally to see if the evidence supports or refutes this theory. Lectins are fairly specific in what sugars they bind to (in the context of the glycans found in the human body), and therefore one would need to be able to show that specific lectins are associated with issues involving tissues whose glycans could conceivably be recognized by that lectin for this theory to have merit. Theories presented as true without experimental evidence to support them are known these days as “alternative facts”, but in science we have a different term to describe them – lies.

Yes, a small number of specific lectins appear to play a contributing role to sensitivities/allergic responses with a few specific compounds, but it is a HUGE leap in logic to handwave and suggest that therefore most lectins cause problems in the body, let alone that dietary lectins are the primary cause of many of the problems in our gastric tract or more distal parts of the body.

Most people realize it would be laughable for me to propose a new surgical procedure, since I’m not a surgeon, so why are so many in the public so ready to believe an MD that proposes a theory completely out of their area of expertise with little to no research from that field supporting his notion?

  44. Thank you for addressing all the woo inner self goddess BS that is served up on a steaming platter of women’s wellness.

  45. I use my jade egg like a sex toy, essentially. I insert it, usually for no more than 20-30 minutes and then boil it and let it dry before storing. I think its important to make a distinction between this type of usage (from which I have personally derived a variety of benefits) and indiscriminately wearing the egg around for hours or potentially days. Or do you feel its always bad and would take to task dildos and other sex toys as well?

    1. Most sex toys are made from medical grade products or substances that bacteria do not adhere well too. They are made of silicone or glass or medical grade plastic. So you cannot compared them to untested, porous jade.

  46. Brilliant. Thank you for serving them the crow they deserve. You should teach a master’s class on writing!

  47. You’re mint, which is mancunian for great! Does anyone remember when the only eggs in our vaginas were released from our ovaries? There was a time if you would’ve shoved august’s birthstone up your jacksie you’d be on the way to A&E. Stupid fucking Gwyneth.

  48. You’re strangely confident about your knowledge of the human body. Being a doctor with years of experience gives you no right to be so confident about the fact that steaming your vagina may not be anywhere near the best decision.

  49. There’s only one way to fight pseudoscience and that is to fight it as Dr. Gunter has done. She should receive a Nobel prize for her courage in taking on the big names from Hollywood. I hope she’ll see fit to attack the biggest asshole of all, Meryl Streep (remember the apple scandal?). And let’s bury homeopathy while we’re at it, one of the greatest hoaxes in the world!

  50. What an amazing response to the nonsense you’re dealing with. Keep it up and thanks for standing up to the idiots!

  51. Very good stuff, but can someone explain to m how “mansplaining” is not a sexist phrase?

Or is thinking men are inferior fine?

  52. Thank you! I’m gobsmacked at the quackery that seems to be running rampant these days. We need more voices of reason like yours.

  53. Educated, articulate, potty-mouthed brilliance. A joy to read such a well-researched and cogently argued assertion of an expert’s opinion. Versus the marketers. Ya, no contest.

  54. Thank you, Dr Gunter, for these words. I am constantly astonished at the belief of people in the untested, unresearched, lacking in scientific method, total guff.
Get back on that steed and tilt your lance at the next target.

  55. Thank you for having the courage to take this on. Goop need to be taken to task for this BS.

  56. This has been the greatest thing I’ve read all year. A template for a brilliant response. Thanks!

  57. *quiet voice
You do good work! I learned a lot!
Loved this piece, biology is not about opinions, but empirical frameworks and expert analysis. THANKS.
    =8)-DX

  58. I so appreciate your ability and willingness to put a scientific perspective on foolishness. As the saying goes ” keep your mind open, but not so open that your brain falls out.” Thank you for standing for women and our health.

  59. Fantastically written piece! Well done.
Scientifically accurate. Eloquent. On the nail!!

  60. Spectacular article Dr Jen! I’ve have an incredible amount of satisfying reading time since following you on Twitter. You’re a champion for science and those who are dedicated to the process. All the best to you!

  61. Found you through Twitter. Since I’m a man, I can’t choose you as my doctor, but I want a doctor just like you. In days like ours, we need to learn to respect science. Way to give it to Goop, and to the disappointing Ms Paltrow.

  62. Thank you thank you thank you!!! As an experimental psychology grad student I regularly bang my head against my desk when reading some (many) of the GOOP articles. Drives me batty how she is using her platform to take advantage of women who don’t know any better and/or are desperate 😦

  63. I’ve never commented on any sort of blog, post, etc. but felt the need here to applaud you on your fantastic response. Let’s smash the patriarchy one mansplainer at a time.

  64. I love everything you just said and I officially have a new girl-crush!! Way to slap down the the hypocritical, voodoo-loving, mansplaining bullies of the world. Heart you!!!!

  65. Phew! I am glad that you cleared up the only way to treat anything is through traditional medicine, pharmaceuticals, or surgery. Also, it is good to know that the only educated people are those who went to medical school. I mean, looking for treatment in any other realm is outrageous.

I am a college and graduate educated special education instructor and I always tell the parents of the children I work with, “You don’t know what I know because I went to college! What have you done?! Read a book, taken 10,000 workshops, become an expert in your child’s needs. That is nothing, I have a lot of letters next to my; my importance outranks your, anyway, anyday!” People need to know their place in life and follow instructions from the professionals.

  66. This response is amazing, Dr. Gunter! I feel so bad for people who trust GOOP for medical advice, hang on every word and believe they need whatever GOOP is selling them in their post. I will pass on the rotten ostrich eggs for kegel exercises for $1800 (with a matching martini shaker for another grand!) or whatever they sell over there.

  67. Oh my fucking God, girl…I love you! Thanks for continuing to make your point and educating us all. You rock.

  68. You are a gift to women and feminism. And we so badly need more of this kind of intelligence in the world. You’re simply fantastic.

    1. Ditto what everyone else said. You are a badass critical thinker for women with nothing to sell but the truth. Go Science!

  69. Very nice reading. Please keep the good work, doctor.

Re: eggs of whatever type and menstrual toxic shock syndrome
“The incidence of menstrual toxic shock syndrome is 1-2/100,000 so it would take a lot of jade egg wearing (meaning the kind of sales that bring tears to eyes of the team at GOOP) to get enough data. ”

To reduce the available data even more, women suffering from toxic shock syndrome may not volunteer the information that they used jade eggs – not out of malevolence, but because it’s simultaneously a very private issue, slightly embarrassing, and easy to forget in the rush of things.
Especially if the victims have been fed misinformation about what is “toxic” and what is safe.

  70. I want to subscribe to your feed but it errors when I try. Please fix it — this is brilliant and you are my new hero.

  71. I wish more physicians would tear into pseudoscientific bullsh*t the way you do. While we can’t always fix the stupid, putting a blinding spotlight on it tells our patients we care enough to protect them from it.

  72. I’ve never read anything you wrote before until my friend Rory posted one of your blogs. I had to join WordPress and follow you. You are one of my heroes now. Thank you for the science. I am so tired of the bullshit and lies spread basically to make a buck with absolutely no science to back it up or worse bad science that no one listens to and could be dangerous for you. You are awesome just awesome keep fighting the good fight! I honestly think people like you saved lives.

  73. I get that you are defending what you think is right, but the internet is filled with info that may or may not be accurate. Going after goop etc. won’t change that. But it certainly does get publicity.

    1. Just so I’m clear on this… you’re saying that the job is too big, so anybody who even tries is doing it only for the sake of publicity?

  74. Thank you for saying it like it is, repeatedly. I remember after the election you said you would devote yourself to debunking fake news. You are debunking fake health marketing like a master! “A gift from quote Gods”. You say it like it is, with evidence base and scientific plausibility. You fulfill a powerful and necessary role in this world!

  75. This was an amazing read, several times I had to stop myself from saying “YES GIRL” out loud (at work, in the ICU, otherwise I probably would have been yelling with righteous indignation and support all the way through).

    THANK YOU FOR THIS.

-a fellow MD and hater of bullshit pseudoscience

  76. Doctors are supposed to do no harm, so Dr. Gunter should probably lose her license for this litany of sick burns against a defenseless asshole.

  77. I haven’t been following this story all that much but this was an incredibly badass teardown that made me want to read up on it. Dr. Gunter, in a just world I think responding to this type of BS and these sorts of charlatans would all be beneath you but I guess we’re all lucky that you don’t feel the same way.

  78. Thankfully I read the goop email to learn about you! I will be following your blog from now on. Thanks for the facts and for standing up for yourself! Science is everything.

  79. Thank you for this fantastic post. I followed a link from Ophelia Benson’s blog and am glad to have found your blog.

  80. WOW. New around here and might I just say I think I’m in love??? Such a terrific and articulate read. So much YAY!!

  81. A mansplainer bragging about how he shared his jism at a conference is pretty funny. Also, screw these patronizing pricks.

  82. Well done, I loved the whole piece – it’s just such a shame there are so many gullible people who willingly put themselves at risk.

  83. Great response. But, how I wish you didn’t have to waste your time on material that is so absurd and contrary to good sense.

  84. Fantastic blog! I had no idea who you were, so I
went your website. I had a chuckle when I read you were from Winnipeg! Me too – off and on! I knew there must be some prairie girl take no bullish-t in you! I am a retired health care professional , albeit with no exciting letters after my name. I worked with people who were dealing with Eating Disorders. Goop and the like have always irritated the hell out of me! They are dangerous purveyors of deception. So Well done! Thank you! I will definitely be reading your future blogs.

  85. Keep fighting the good fight. The world is your stage. Show them that bullies fronting corporate interests don’t have the power they once did, and we’re on to them.

  86. Excellent response. So well written. Of course, I assume they will ignore all of your points because they would have to admit that they are idiots, which, of course, they are. I enjoyed it and I am sure many others who read this will find it very informative. Thank you!

  87. Dr. Jen Gunter MD, FRCS(C), FACOG, DABPM, ABPM (pain)

    Gwyneth Paltrow, SAG/AFTRA

Which one would seem to logically have better grasp of the reality of science and medicine in the real world?

  88. Excellent post! Thanks for being one of the crusaders out there who try to put useful and correct information out there for the masses. In addition to them attacking your opinion and credibility, do any of them actually know what’s in the products they peddle? Probably not because they just hear it’s “natural” and has the “healing powers of crystals”. But if they did, would they actually be willing to put it in their vaginas?

For example, let’s discuss the infamous jade eggs. Jade is a term that is used for both a mineral and and rock (not the same thing) that have a specific distinctive colour. The mineral, known as jadeite, is a type of pyroxene that has fairly benign elements in it. But…jade eggs are often not made from jadeite and can be made from other pyroxene minerals that have things like vanadium, chromium, zinc and other elements in its structure. So in other words, things that shouldn’t be in your vagina. The other thing that is sometimes called “jade” is a type of rock called nephrite. Nephrite is used for this very thing because it can be easily carved and polished and has things like tremolite and actinolite in it. Remember those last two things because those two minerals have relatives that show up in the asbestos group minerals. *GASP*. So could all jade eggs have asbestos in them? Probably not but it is possible.

Aside from all of these random things I just wrote about though is the fact that, despite being smoothly polished and rounded, these “eggs” are porous and have fractures and micro-fractures within them. Holes and cracks that maybe had hidden things in them before you introduced them into your body. Or holes and cracks that now have things left in them after you introduced them to your body. On top of that, the pH of your vagina and its secretions is acidic and could actually etch the surface over time, leading to more fractures, flaking of the object and hidey-holes for bacteria and other gross things.

How do I know all this stuff about jade eggs???!!! Is it magic? Sorcery? My third or inner eye? Wikipedia? No, I’m a geologist (that’s H.BSc, M.Sc, and Ph.D for anyone who’s asking). So for all the scientists, medical professionals and smart people who make informed decisions that commented in this thread, you’re awesome. And to those like Dr. Jen who blog and push people to ask questions and research things from reliable sources, keep doing you.

    1. I was never good at science in school except for Geology and Astronomy which both made sense to me for some reason and so I continue to love both subjects. Thanks for posting this common sense scientific response.

  89. This is awesome. You are awesome. Thank God for educated women. I have long been troubled by Gwyneth’s horrible advice to women in so many areas. I am so thankful you have provided the scientific basis for standing up to her. Good for you. Do not be bullied.

  90. You should be able to answer a silly statement like that one without using buzzwords like “misogyny” and made up terms like “mansplaining”. Unscientific thinking has no gender and it should not be necessary to be sexist in order to debunk it. I completely agree with the points you raise but I would expect less populism from a professional.

    1. Misogyny is not a buzzword, it’s a daily reality, particularly when discussing issues related to women’s health.

      1. But mansplaining certainly is. See? My spellchecker even noticed. It’s an annoying word that just puts “man” in there to shame men because that’s the fashion these days. I’ve been “mansplained” by strong women all my life. I’ve seen them do it to each other. It’s called being assertive, and in some cases overconfident. All a woman has to do is what Dr. Jen is doing. The stupid “mansplaining” bullshit just sounds fucking retarded and needs to go away.

      2. Lop – And yet you have to bring ableist language into this while claiming another form of discrimination to be “on trend” and/or nonexistent? Forget tone policing, anyone using the r word gives themselves away as someone who ought to be living in 1950.

And no, I don’t really care that I’m necroposting. Your terminology deserves to be called out regardless.

  91. Thank you for taking the time to respond to a post so outlandish I couldn’t finish reading it with the correct level of outrage. I used to think Goopy was funny when she was peddling gold plated blenders, but the joke is over. She is dangerous.

  92. Thank you so much for this article and sticking up to and exposing such a well- oiled machine as GP / Goop.
I enjoy aspects of ‘wellness’ and certainly don’t believe western medicine is the be all and end all yet also have a healthy scepticism to certain ‘wellness’ elements that are obviously not backed up by any kind of research.
I occasionally read GOOP and have at times enjoyed their point of view however after this I will never read or purchase anything from them again.
This is bullying pure and simple coupled with rank hypocrisy and patronising mansplaining BS.
Absolutely foul behaviour especially coming from a supposedly “feminist” business.

  93. Thanks GOOP and Paltrow for bringing me to this blog and this fantastic author! I had literally never read anything on this blog before, but now it is getting a bookmark!

  94. Brava! Thank you for this fearless, badass, sane, knowledgeable, response to that ridiculous piece from Paltrow, Gundry and their minions at Goop. Keep up the great work.

  95. You are truly my new hero. Science and commerce aren’t always the best bedfellows – and your amazing response (along with Dr Gundry’s acerbic vitriol) just further highlights how you have rocked their proverbial gravy train.

  96. Hello Dr Gunter, what is your standpoint on the lectins that Dr Gundry talks about in his article? I am interested in the idea that the seeds and skin of the nightshades are the main issue with these types of foods?

  97. I wonder what ER doctors say when the string breaks and some woman Shows up for egg retrevial … let’s be honest here it’s gonna happen. … Women who take this advise make us all look bad, I’m mean really, how stupid are you to shove a chunk of rock up there …all rocks are porous to some degree or another … mind boggling!

  98. This was a joy to read. So good to see a real doctor take on the quacks so devastatingly.

  99. Thank you – a million thank yous! I haven’t read Goop in years and can’t believe they have the audacity to make these claims. I see this in the nutrition field all the time too. I don’t understand this distrust of science and trust in total charlatans. Please keep up the good work!

  100. Regarding Aviva Room I have frankly never heard of her, but she appears to be a vaccine skeptic so there’s that.

Err, the correct term is “anti-vaccine kook.”

    Emphatic concurrence otherwise.

  101. Even if well intentioned and not just a cynical money grab – pseudo science harms people. As someone who suffered from major anxiety and depression for the first 30 years of my life I fell victim to any number of people who offered sexy answers dressed up in ancient cultures. Stop eating X, practice Y. I went through the gamut. It was only when my health was completely failing me and desperation set in that I sought actual un-sexy medical help that finally brought me the major relief I had been seeking.

Pseudo science doesn’t just harmlessly provide an alternative to people who want to try unconventional medical approaches – it creates a large amount of noise targeting people at their most vulnerable – reducing their chances of finding treatments that work. Paltrow – living in an incredibly privileged position that was gained no doubt more through chance than any other factor – may have the time and resources to waste on shamans and ancient weeds. Inducing those in a far less privileged position to spend their limited resources on similar pursuits is shameful.

    1. She has two parents who were already famous in the industry, he father is a producer/director and her mother is Blythe Danner. There was no chance about it. I have no problem with this however, a lot of people follow in their parents footsteps and get a step up that way.

  102. I love you! It’s good to know that there are intelligent, straight-talking, funny women taking the time to put things right! As a clinical psychologist I appreciate you balanced explanation of research evidence and the ‘facts’. How insidious that this GOOP bullsh#t is out there, twisting the facts, omitting evidence, influencing people, and preying on their concerns to line Paltrow et al’s pockets. It’s so easy to be manipulated and feel scared when you read that tampons contain toxins etc. I hope that your words are read widely and the balance is redressed; one insightful, hilarious blog post at a time!

  103. You have so much patience with this moron and her team. I would slap her with a big “fuck you lady”.

  104. Not only is Gundry an obnoxious idiot, it looks like he’s grossly misrepresenting his academic work.

In his letter, he claims: “But, since you did not do even a simple Google search of me before opening your mouth, let me give you a brief history: I have published over 300 papers, chapters, and abstracts on my research in peer-reviewed journals and have presented over 500 papers at peer-reviewed academic meetings.”

Yet, a PubMed search for him reveals just 136 citations, only 2 of which are more recent than 2004. The other 134 citations are all for his surgical work/research, occurring before his conversion to pseudoscientific nutrition hogwash. So it would seem that either he is lying about his publications, or he is bragging about publishing in bogus, predatory journals that mainstream medicine won’t even index. And I don’t know which would make him seem more pathetic.

    1. not to defend that doofus, but pubmed does not index book chapters and abstracts that were presented at meetings but not published

  105. Thanks Doc. In a world diving into unreason that is attacking the very concept of knowledge your post is a shining light. Hopefully your beacon will help a lot of people move their ships away from the dangerous ignorance rocks.

  106. Thanks to your writing, I feel inspired to say that today after reading these posts, I have begun to try to stop fasting and fasting and then inevitably binging from fear based propaganda like goop, which I am not going to read any longer… . Thank you for your candor and telling the truth. To those merchants of anxiety, happy to say that this fucking doctor has helped me a whole fucking lot, f-bombs and all, because of her integrity and expertise.

  107. I’m a gay man and the son of medical professionals and I regularly check your blog because facts matter and you have them. Thank you for giving the REALNESS to the hyper privileged Paltrow and her money hungry minions. They are the antithesis of feminism and women’s health.

  108. Dr. Gunter, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the airing of factual health information. One request, if you would be so kind-citing the studies behind some of your numbers, such as the quantity of nitrosamines that prove hazardous to one’s health. Thanks!

  109. He honestly cited JISM to support, nevermind, I’m laughing so hard I can’t type.

  110. Can one be a “Wielder of the Lasso of Truth” and also Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons at the same time?

It seems that you burnt down Dr. Gundry’s house as you rode that train through England!

  111. And people wonder why reproductive rights are under attack? Because idiots like Gwinnie shovel crap to women who need education, not Jade eggs. I solemnly swear never to steam, starch, fold or insert rocks into any orifice, so help me Dr. Jen!

  112. You GO, Girl…I mean, seriously, this article should put to bed the ridiculousness of GOOP using pseudoscience and pseudocredentials to hide the fact that they are basically just trying to sell shit to the masses for whom they clearly have much disdain. Well done DOCTOR for sticking to the facts and laying it all out in simple terms. Sadly, I’m certain GOOP won’t take this lying down, jade egg insertion notwithstanding. Hang in there and thank you Dr. Gunter for fighting nonsense with knowledge.

  113. I just met you, yet I love you. Just the facts, ma’am, and hard evidence. You brought it.

  114. Thank you Dr. Gunter, we need more science and a great deal less celebrity pseudo medical nonsense. It is absolutely beyond common sense that so many slavishly support the ghost. In a major department store in my city there is an entire sales area devoted to goop. Appropriately named when you think about it.

  115. You preach the choir, just as they do. Dr Gunter, Patrow, etal are only fortifying their base.

BUT they only defend an existing base. Whereas you build up a structure for the future. Because reality needs to be easily accessible by those who don’t know and are looking for answers. So these blogs matter.

And outrage needs to clicked in order to push regulations and get the snake oil and it’s charlatans off the shelf and out of our sight. These fights matter.

So they can bleat and their bleating will make their devoted buyers feel more comfortable. But you are building toward change and their destruction.

  116. Wow. Relatable. Smart. Real. Thank you, Dr. Gunter. We need people like you to combat the ridiculous. Yep, by “ridiculous” I mean Paltrow and Goop.

  117. As they said in the fleet (in my Navy Daze): Bravo Zulu! If you don;t speak FlagHoist, that means “Well Done”

  118. From a fellow health professional and a women who is simply over mansplainers – thank you, thank you, thank you. I could add more but I believe that conveys it all.

  119. Just who I’d go to for advice on vaginal health: an old retired CV surgeon guy. Everything south of the diaphragm is a mystery to him, I’m sure. I wish I had a dollar for every time I’ve been insulted or patronized by a CV surgeon. Of course when they want a new central line placed in their patient at 2 AM they deign to ask for me.

  120. This turned up in my news feed, and I had no prior knowledge of what led to the article because I so seriously avoid pop culture. It was perhaps the best thing I’ve read in years and my nerdy scientific heart was deeply impressed with your candor, knowledge, and professional yet appropriately bitchy slap-back. Thank you.

  121. Absolutely brilliant! And good on you for not being bullied by these clowns.

  122. Good on you Dr Jen. We need more excellent female doctors and scientists to help and empower women.

  123. OMG! Thank you Dr. Gunter for this piece. I cringe every time I hear Paltrow hawking the “natural” beauty products she endorses. I cannot believe that intelligent women would fall for her jade egg carrying & vagina steaming crap.
I am definitely going to start following your blog!
    F-bomb users unite!

  124. Reblogged this on Manang Bok's House and commented:
GOOP=Goliath (hello! this is Gwyneth Paltrow with her army of publicists and really, I am supposed to believe that her very polished, very merchandising blog does not even have one professional multimedia expert at the helm?),
    Dr. Jen Gunter=David

    goop.com = alternative facts,
    drjengunter.wordpress.com = evidence based facts (or at least she is honest about where her claims come from;
and really, honesty, should be the core value of every scientific endeavor)

I am reblogging this as my contribution to stopping the spread of pseudoscience and ridiculous ideas from people who think that they can away with it because they are Big Celebrity and have the advantage of multiple media platforms to infect others with their toxic memes*.

    * “meme” is a very recently invented word, defined as “an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture” (Wikipedia). It was coined by Richard Dawkins in his book “The Selfish Gene”. Recently, the Internet has been the culprit of propagating highly infectious memes — goop being one of them.

  125. Everything about this is fan-fucking-tastic. I am hard pressed to pick a favorite line. I know it might suck for you, but I’m glad they targeted you because damn, girl, I don’t envision anyone else taking the GOOPers to school like you just did.

    Thank you.

  126. Think we can convince Jenny McCarthy that GOOP causes autism and the two of them can just duke it out until they both go away?

It’s unfortunate, because actors, musicians, writers, etc. who do back good science, evidence-based medicine, humanitarian causes or progressive solutions-based policies, get so much bullshit about how they should stick to acting and not speak about things ‘above their pay grade’ as it were. And the twits – sorry, the twats – like Paltrow provide the ammunition for those arguments. If she’d ever bothered to learn word-one about the actual science she’s meddling in, she would apologize to every woman she’s fleeced and risked the health and well-being of.

Thank you for being a voice of reason in this miasma of misinformation.

    1. Well, the mineral Jadeite is aluminium rich and we all know that aluminium is the current object of hate among anti vaxxers/autism conspiracists. Only needs the seed sowing.

    2. I don’t think Paltrow would like it but there is a great similarity, snake oil-sales wise, with the rise to prominence of Donald Trump. He was also ‘an entertainer’ who portrayed himself as an expert on everything while selling Americans a complete and utter bill of goods.Well done Dr.Gunter for exposing this for-profit psycho-babble garbage.

    3. Twat is not acceptable no matter why you are talking about. Please keep your insults gender neutral. Insulting a woman by calling her a vulgar word for vagina is offensive. If you don’t know why, my explaining it probably won’t help. Just remember that these are words we 2nd wave feminist fought to get out of regular usage because men threw them around the work place and in locker rooms as a way to keep us in our place. Other words like bitch and cunt have been said to me as I had a gun held to my head. Just please stop.

      1. A: I’m not a “wave feminist” of any kind. And many of the people I know who claim second-wave, are the most oppressive and offensive purveyors of “white feminism,” TERF behavior and the like. I am an intersectional feminist, no wave, no alternate agenda that seeks to call itself some special version. I am simply someone who fights for civil rights for everyone, and while that definitely includes women, I focus most of my word specifically on the rights of women who deal with intersecting abuse, like women of color, transwomen, disabled women, female sex workers, etc. So what words they would want out of the vernacular is irrelevant.

B: While I will not claim to have ever had a gun to my head or remotely understand what that feels like, I’ve spent years dealing with systemic abuse of all kinds, from multiple men – including being called things which are a lot worse than twat or bitch. Their behavior does not dictate my language choices – my ex used to call me a child when he was screaming at me for refusing to participate in his particular sexual kinks. Some people think the word “child” used in such a fashion in ageism and unacceptable, I’m still going to use it when it’s germane. If you find words for body parts triggering that is unfortunate, and I am sorry that you were harmed in a fashion that such language upsets you. But I am not going to restrict my language in every place imaginable, of a perfectly acceptable word that is used interchangably with male and gender-neutral body part words, across the world.

C: I use the words twat, cunt, bitch, asshole, dickhead, bell-end, etc. for men and women (and again non-binary) alike, and I will continue to do so – unless a forum has rules against it, but if there were such rules here my comment would’ve been deleted by now. In fact I use the word twat about 3x more for men than women, and it is never in any way about implying they are feminine, non-masculine or resemble a woman or a vagina in any capacity. I do not stop using those words because some people think ‘blue’ language is offensive. And I am not going to stop using them because they are tools of the oppressives, any more than I’m going to stop using words like transgender simply because some assclowns use that word to other people who aren’t cisgender. If restriction of such words was a solution that 2nd wave feminists thought would address female oppression at all, well frankly that was their myopic mistake.

So let me explain to you, how language conflicts work. You have every right to say why you think the use of a word is bad, offensive or wrong. You also have every right to say it upsets you and expect acknowledgement of that. I would not fault you for any such comments or complaints and I acknowledge that if were ever in a conversation with you directly, knowing it’s a triggering type of language for you, I would not use that language around you. But you don’t get to decide what words are “unacceptable no matter what.” Not for me. Because I will make those determinations on my own, like adult student of the ‘Carlin School of Language’ that I am. So next time try simply expressing what you don’t like, or are upset by, and not telling others how to communicate.

        Have a nice day.

      2. Twat is used routinely in Britain to describe someone who’s wilfully stupid or obnoxious. It’s not gender specific.

  127. I wonder if `Dr` Gundry has read the DISCLAIMER on the GOOP website ?
It says (shorter version ) that if the products don`t work you cannot blame GOOP .

  128. Poor Gwyneth, science is being mean to her, what with its typical disciplinary commitment to public health and evidence based decisions… !

Glad you were able to do such a great and calm comeback.

  129. “I will not read your book, but I will be happy to read your research when it makes it to JAMA or NEJM or BMJ.”

    Yesssssss

  130. So glad that you’re here to explain Goopshit away. So thankful that there’s a proper legit resource in you as a DOCTOR. Hopefully more Goop readers will be exposed to your blog now and can now make informed decisions!

  131. That was the most unexpectedly educational read I’ve had in a long time. I love to learn but you drew me in with your writing and bam before I knew it I was balls deep into the world of Hollywood, American healthcare, “natural” vs. professional medicine, boards of authority and the ethics of four letters arranged to express oneself. I assure you, my applauding your excellent communication skills and necessary handling of this experience can be in no way relevant, as I have no particular skills in literally any of the information you have provided. But great fucking job, honestly I loved reading that story and I hate celebrity, biology, and suggested things to read on my google news haha. So I must say your badass and sorry if you can’t get your message across to the ones that really matter. thanks
P.s sorry again for the length of said comment and sorry for the amount of sorries’ eh!

  132. Great response to the goopy bullies! Since the brand is now tarnished, likely they saw a big dip in their sales and need to drum up business.

Did you read the disclaimer at the end of the article? and the JISM? OMG LOLz for days 😀

  133. “Team Goop” conspicuously fails to link to your criticism of their horseshit despite naming you.

This is pathognomonic of “We got nuthin’.” It’s an inviolable Internet operating principle.

If they really believed that your criticism is factually wrong, they would have no quarrel linking to it or, at the very least, quoting your words and pointing out exactly where they think you have gone astray. But of course they won’t do this because they fear that at least a few of their readers just might be discerning enough to realize they’ve been rooked by Ms. Paltrow and her cavalcade of hucksters.

But I can predict what their excuse would be: You have a potty mouth, and no way no how are they linking to someone who uses by gosh egad drat darn bad words! (A lot of bullshit-spewing blogs and sites use this excuse to ban dissent — but Team Goop doesn’t even allow comments. period.)

It’s bad enough that *anyone* peddles the crap Ms. Paltrow does, but she can’t even fall back on the argument, however shoddy, that she just wants to make a buck. She doesn’t need the money, which means she actually stands behind the woo she’s slinging. There’s nothing more dangerous to me than a lunatic with money and a platform (see: the current POTUS).

  134. Good for you for sticking up for women’s health! People can be very defensive about alternative cures and holistic theories, but there’s a fine line between tolerance and allowing dangerous ideas to spread.

I’ve taken heat for questioning at-home childbirth, for example. I’m no expert (unlike you), but common sense says that women used to die in childbirth all the time and it’s clearly dangerous to be away from medical professionals and their tools if something goes wrong…

We need people who know what they’re talking about to weigh in on the wild jungle of misinformation, so thank you!

  135. My wife has pelvic floor problems. She pees herself if she laughs too hard. She has had two children and doesn’t feel like herself in a lot of ways.

Any suggestions? I just want my wife back.

    1. I’m sure the doctor will have a more specific response, but in the meantime, as someone who has been right where your wife is – there are physiotherapists that specialise in pelvic floor rehabilitation and in many more cases than you would think, they can help. If only they would tell us that as part of the medical aftercare of pregnancy and labour. I believe the fact that most of us do not know this is entirely cultural (I am told anecdotally that the approach in France, for example, is quite different).

    2. I had a similar problem. Pelvic floor exercise didn’t work. But I started regular exercises for other reasons (general health and fitness). At first I needed a pad to do jumping jacks, but after a few weeks I realized I was no longer leaking. Now I can run with no problems.

  136. You are a God of big responses, no question! I am heartily sick of non scientific bullshit that passes for extra super duper good care of oneself. And I am forever in the camp of any doctor who actually provides medical care in the form of an abortion.

  137. Brava, Doctor. If you take care of your patients with the same genius as you do the English language, they are in good hands.

  138. I read about this stupid mansplaining and the rest, on Respectful Insolence, earlier today. I’m glad to see your response here. I suspect that Colbert might be too big a target, even for Paltrow.

JISM, indeed. I guess it goes with jade eggs.

  139. loved this. But – you are feeding the trolls. and Gwenyth? well, she has such nice teeth and a voice that coos…… (yes, coos, like a dove). So, of course she is an expert. She is selling love and her approval. I agree about Gundry’s “mansplaining” – what would be the gender-specific equivalent for a woman who uses her alluring image to entice people to part with their money for an illusion?

    1. FYI – there wouldn’t be a equivalent to mansplainig for a women, under the definition you gave, because the definition of mansplaning has absolutely nothing to do with allure, enticement or illusions. So saying you agree seems to be suspect. Mansplaining is when a man patronizingly presumes to explain something to a woman, who clearly has the expertise/experience to be better informed on the subject than he is. Like when a quack tries to explain how event peer review works to an internationally board certified OB/GYN.

What you are describing is one who sells snake oil, so while a snake-oil salesman is the most common term, the female term would obviously be snake-oil saleswoman. Surprisingly, of the vast amount of English words which are inherently masculine or feminine in their usage, there aren’t many words for a charlatan, a con artist, a grifter, etc. which are gender specific at all. I’m guessing because it served the purposes of men for those terms to be easily to apply to all genders.

      1. Is there a term for people who mansplain what mansplaining is? I’m not sure how Dr. Gundry’s tirade about Dr. Gunter could be interpreted as something other than mansplaining.

  140. Whoa, I bet they didn’t believe you would be able to come back so strong. So many good points. I love your last sentence. That’s the way to get under his skin, I bet.

  141. Okay, wait. He’s pointing out that his work is featured prominently in JISM? JISM?!? That’s the sort of acronym you get when you let a 13 year-old name your publication…

    1. Pointing out his JISM article while mansplaining the peer-review process, it was almost too much for me to handle!

  142. Congrats on getting under the skin of the charlatans so badly. Gundry has nothing useful to say, so he attacks you for using Paltrow’s verbiage (and then doesn’t even link to your post). To me, that sums up the quality of their response.

And their choice to target you instead of one of the bigger fish out there betrays their cowardice.

  143. I just love that Dr. Gundry was a CV surgeon who left practice to follow the teaching of a guy named “Big Ed”. Wow, just wow. I’ll stick with scientists, thanks.

  144. Awesome I’m a GP In UK and this pseudoscience bollocks drives me mad. If you would like to start on the UK daily mail next that would be great.

  145. Brilliant! Dr. Gunter, MD, FRCS(C), FACOG, DABPM, ABPM. I have an entirely science based girl crush on you.

  146. “I was blogging about pseudoscience long before Paltrow first squatted over a pot of steaming allergens and leveraged her celebrity to draw attention to her website.”

You just made my tea shoot out of my nose

  147. I wrote down a great quote awhile ago but don’t remember where I read it: “Consumption will never be the locust of feminist empowerment”. Seems applicable here, to say the least. Because make no mistake, goop – as fun as I find it occasionally as a ridiculous lifestyle blog – is at its core ONLY about consumption in various forms. And consumption as it benefits the company. e.g. They are selling overpriced vitamins by the boatloads, when they could just be telling people which vitamins they think work. They are trying to sell things. Full stop. Consumption has its place but don’t pretend to be something you’re not.

  148. Mic drop of the fucking century. Well done!

I had never heard of Gundry before his condescending letter to you, but I can now say he’s one of the worst people on the internet. His site (http://gundrymd.com/) is nothing but a supplement store. Nothing like taking advantage of the public through abuse of your title as M.D., right?

  149. Brava! (So now information is priceless, but also valueless. There’s so much of it that accurate information assumes a premium, but accuracy requires a trusted mediator, or better an untrusted mediator. We suffer with our tendencies: we _wish_ that things were true that would be more hospitable — science is maybe less friendly than magic, I dunno. I wish that jade eggs jammed everywhere would end famine.)

  150. Excellent response to Bullshit. Paltrow & Gundry need to know that “Bullshit baffles Brains”

    1. Agreed, this is the best response one could have ever written to the goop dangerous nonsense. Thanks, Dr. Gunter!

    2. Gwennie should read this and grow the fuck up, or better yet she should have her Mommie read it and tell her why she should take her site down, it is dangerous. She is a decent actor, certainly not a great one. But I am sixty and I was a feminist before she was born. She is no feminist, she is dangerous. What an asshole.
